Online Learning for Boards: Internal Controls
According to the NCUA, the board of directors should employ five types of internal controls "to ensure maximum levels of service, growth, and protection for the members":
1. Effective organization, or the logical and secure delegation of responsibilities and authority in loan approval and disbursement, countersigning of checks, and account opening and maintenance.
2. Budgetary planning, including cost/benefit analyses and measuring actual vs. budgeted expenses.
3. A properly designed and executed accounting system.
CUES Director members can review the two other internal controls and study about further aspects of board governance—then test their knowledge—in the CUES Director Education Center, now a member benefit (password required; e-mail cues@cues.org for help).
Gym Waiver: Terri Larson, VP/lending at $75.8 million Highmark Federal Credit Union has shared a waiver of liability for exercise equipment in CUES Members Share. Employees must sign this waiver to use the gym equipment in the CU’s facility. Find the policy, which was uploaded on May 13, here by selecting “Human Resources” from the category pull-down menu. You can also find CUES' Fitness Center Release and Waiver of Claims form in the same spot.
