CUES FYI
Now that the social media wave has firmly hit the credit union shores – becoming a truly revolutionary means to interact with members – it’s time to think about how to measure this new media to quantify your efforts. Member News:
Obituary: This past Friday, CUES member Defarra (Dean) Gaymon, CCE, was tragically killed while in New Jersey to attend his 30th high school reunion. He was the CEO of $56 million/15,000-member Credit Union of Atlanta, Atlanta, a graduate of CUES’ CEO Institute, and a central figure in the "I am CUES" campaign (see his story here). His colleagues and classmates remember him as an achievement-oriented CEO, yet always concerned about his staff and credit union members. Read CUES’ President/CEO Fred Johnson’s tribute to Gaymon here.
New Position: $80 million/15,000-member Montgomery County Employees Federal Credit Union, Rockville, Md., has hired Jim Norris, formerly head of Washington, D.C.-based $77 million AFL-CIO Employees Federal Credit Union, as president/CEO.
He succeeds Libby Mitchell, who retired after 23 years at Montgomery County EFCU.
Retirement: Following 23 years of unprecedented leadership, Loren Dickinson, president/CEO of $343 million/26,000-member Nutmeg State Federal Credit Union, Rocky Hill, Conn., will retire on Oct. 31. Prior to his tenure at Nutmeg State FCU, Dickinson served for 19 years as EVP/member services for the Credit Union League of Connecticut. Throughout his career, he has been very active in the credit union movement, serving on the board of directors and in various positions for the CULCT.
Milestone: Alabama Telco Credit Union, Birmingham, Ala., recently hit a big milestone when it reached over $500 million in assets. The CU serves 52,000 members. “It’s hard to imagine within our 76 years of business, we’ve grown our $70 capital base into a half-billion dollar company. It’s definitely an achievement worth celebrating for the credit union industry as a whole,” states Alabama Telco CU President/CEO Linda Cencula, a CUES member.
Recognition: Of 1,200 San Francisco Bay Area companies considered, $1 billion/70,000-member Pacific Service Credit Union, Walnut Creek, Calif., was recently honored as a 2010 Top WorkPlace by the Bay Area News Group. Pacific Service CU ranked 12th among the 35 Top Small WorkPlaces and was the only financial institution on the list. The CU achieved outstanding ratings in five areas: direction/leadership, execution, career development, workplace conditions and pay and benefits.
People Helping People: The WEOKIE Foundation, Oklahoma City, Okla., raised $25,829--a record amount--during its Fourth Annual Golf Tournament on June 3 at Rose Creek Golf Course in Edmond. This money will be used for educational scholarships and financial education. The golf tournament was attended by more than 130 golfers. The foundation’s goal is to promote $770 million/50,700-member WEOKIE Credit Union’s commitment to social responsibility and to educate credit union members and the community so they are able to make better financial choices.
$841 million/73,700-member Fort Knox Federal Credit Union, Radcliff, Ky., has partnered with the Radcliff Police to fight driving under the influence. Preventive education is the primary goal of a new driver simulation program now offered by the Radcliff Police. With the help of a federal grant, the department purchased an eco-friendly four-seat electric mini-car used to replicate sensory perceptions of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Fort Knox FCU donated a three-quarter-ton pickup truck to tow a tandem enclosed trailer with the modified golf cart and other equipment needed for the DUI simulation. The truck sports police striping and the CU’s sponsorship sign. Fort Knox FCU and the Radcliff Police have collaborated on several projects including a children’s bounce house that promotes crime prevention and an Ident-A-Kid computer and printer to produce picture identification cards for children.
Despite triple digit temperatures, the staff and members of $50 million/8,200-member FocalPoint Credit Union, Chittenango, N.Y., enjoyed the CU’s third annual Classic Car Cruise on July 8, and raised food and funds for the Food Bank of Central New York. Event attendees enjoyed classic cars, and refreshments, balloons and fun activities. Attendees received a cold beverage and hot dog when they donated food or money to the food bank. CU CEO Marilyn Marra-Crolick is a CUES member.
