Blog: 'Ambition' and 'Intention' are the New 'Mission' and 'Vision': Being successful in business today is about knowing the "why" of what you're doing, Tansley Stearns, CME, CCE, told attendees at April's meeting of the North Carolina Council of CUES. A recent Harvard Business Review article, "Betterness vs. Business," suggests that firms should exist to make the world a better place and that they should move from a focus on differentiation to a focus on actually making a difference, said Stearns, AVP/corporate strategy/government relations for $4.5 billion Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Bethpage, N.Y. Member News:
Anniversary: VyStar Credit Union, Jacksonville, Fla., celebrated its 60th anniversary on April 29, when more than 200 officials, dignitaries and employees gathered to mark the occasion at its corporate headquarters. As part of its celebration, the CU renamed its headquarters the “Cascone Building” in honor of Michael Cascone, who currently serves as secretary on VyStar’s board of directors, and who worked for over two years to convince the leaders of Naval Air Station Jacksonville and others that there was a need for a credit union. The CU has 61 CUES members as part of its CUES Advancing Management Membership.

Retirement/Promotion: Sharon Custer, president/CEO of BMI Federal Credit Union, Dublin, Ohio, is retiring after 40 years with the CU and 25 as CEO. William Allender, CPA, CCE, former executive vice president, is the new president/CEO.

Promotion: Shane London is the new president/CEO of Deseret Federal Credit Union, Salt Lake City. Previously he was chief financial officer. He succeeds Clint Gurney, who retired.

Bruce Gillooly
has been promoted to VP/ public affairs at Security Service Federal Credit Union, San Antonio. He joined the CU in 2007 as AVP/corporate communications after serving more than 22 years in the U.S. Army and retiring as lieutenant colonel.

Honored: Goldenwest Credit Union, Ogden, Utah, has been named the 2012 Utah “Best of State” medal winner in the credit union category for the fifth consecutive year. The program acknowledges excellence in a vast array of industry sectors, including business, education, hospitality, retail and technology. Winners were rated and judged on their impact on the community; excellence and achievement within their industry; and innovation and originality.

Milestone: Dade County Federal Credit Union, Doral, Fla., recently announced Prosper Chevalier as its 100,000th member. To celebrate the milestone, the credit union’s board of directors presented the Miami Gardens resident with a check for $1,000.

Community Involvement: Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Bethpage, N.Y., sponsored a Senior Pops Orchestra of Long Island concert at Suffolk Community College’s Van Nostrand Theatre.

To celebrate another successful school year, Achieva Credit Union, Clearwater, Fla., surprised two lucky schools with a pizza party.  The CU asked teachers to suggest their schools on Facebook and then Achieva Street Team members provided pizza and drinks, along with some CU goodies, during the last week of school.

Community West Credit Union, Kentwood, Mich., will be giving $25,000 worth of iPads to young adults in the community during the “Summer of the iPad” giveaway. This initiative will provide iPads to recent high school graduates and current college undergraduates as they pursue their careers or further their education.

CUES Supplier Member News: EHS Design, Seattle, announced that Chris Hamilton, AIA, has joined the firm as a principal. Hamilton comes to EHS Design from Callison LLC, where he served as founder and principal in charge of the financial industry group. At EHS, Hamilton will oversee client and business development for the financial, retail and corporate sectors.
