Blog: The Advantage of Being Different: According to Youngme Moon, author of Different: Escaping the Competitive Herd, three popular companies (listed in this CUES Skybox blog post) embraced potential negatives, and actually flaunted them. Rather than attempting to match their competitors, they emphasized their uniqueness, she told her audience at the 2012 World Council of Credit Unions Annual Convention in Gdansk, Poland.

Honored: Andrews Federal Credit Union, Suitland, Md., was recently ranked among the best military credit unions in the country for its international presence by NerdWallet.com, a personal finance website committed to spreading the word about consumer-friendly banking. The CU has 11 CUES members.
The National Credit Union Foundation announced Hubert H. Hoosman, Jr., president/CEO of Vantage Credit Union in Bridgeton, Mo., is the winner of the 2013 Herb Wegner Memorial Award for Individual Achievement.
For the fourth consecutive year, Florida Trend magazine has selected Navy Federal Credit Union, Vienna, Va., as one of Florida’s Best Companies To Work For 2012. Navy FCU ranks 13th this year. The CU has four CUES members.
Name Change: GTE Federal Credit Union, Tampa, Fla., has decided it's time to change its name to GTE Financial. The CU has three CUES members.
New Headquarters: Texas Trust Credit Union, Mansfield, Texas, has embarked on the next phase of its growth strategy with the purchase of an office park. The $721 million credit union has purchased two buildings in Arlington, Texas, which will serve as the new corporate headquarters as well as a long-term financial investment. The CU has 12 CUES members.
Community Involvement: In recognition of the achievements of 26 students in school, at home and within their communities, Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation, Herndon, Va., has awarded a combined $115,000 in scholarships. The Foundation has two scholarship programs: The Ben DeFelice Scholarship, which presented $5,000 each to 20 students; and the Central Intelligence Retirees Association Scholarship, which awarded $2,500 each to six students. Northwest FCU CU has 17 CUES members.
Vancity Credit Union, Vancover, British Columbia enviro™Visa cardholders helped raise $1 million in grants this year by using their Visa credit cards for daily transactions. In keeping with the credit union's philosophy to serve its members’ long-term well-being by building sustainable communities, this year's grants support a range of environmental initiatives focused on creating a sustainable food system. Every year, a portion of the credit card’s profits is distributed back to the local community through the Vancity enviroFund™. So far this year, $250,000 has been distributed in grants to support 21 farmers' markets throughout British Columbia. The remaining $750,000 will fund 12 organizations and a variety of projects that provide British Columbians with greater access to local and organic food. The CU has three CUES members.
CUES Supplier Member News: Credit Union 24, Tallahassee, Fla. announced that it is disbursing $1.1 million in patronage dividends to its shareholding credit unions during Q3 2012. Due to the network’s cooperative, credit union-owned structure, Credit Union 24 returns profits to credit unions that own shares of the network in the form of cash and equity certificates.
