Anniversary: In commemoration of its 60th anniversary, San Mateo Credit Union, Redwood City, Calif., sponsored a concert at the historic Fox Theatre in downtown Redwood City on Aug. 22. Featured artists were Blood, Sweat & Tears and singer Chuck Negron, former lead vocalist of Three Dog Night. The CU has nine CUES members.
Appointed: NAFCU announced Monday that it has named Martin Breland, president/CEO of Tower Federal Credit Union, Laurel, Md., as Region II director on the NAFCU Board of Directors. Breland replaces retiring board member Charlie Thomas, who stepped down concomitant to his resignation from the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union Board. In accordance with NAFCU’s bylaws, Breland may serve in his appointed capacity until the association’s annual business meeting in 2013.
Honored: In recognition of his outstanding leadership and numerous contributions to the credit union system, the National Credit Union Foundation is pleased to announce Rick Craig, president/CEO of America First Credit Union, Ogden, Utah, as winner of the 2013 Herb Wegner Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement. Craig is a past CUES chairman of the board and 2004 CUES Executive of the Year.
Coors Credit Union, Golden, Colo., has been named “Best Bank/Credit Union” in Jefferson County Colorado by voters of the Best of Jeffco, conducted by Colorado Community Media through OurColoradonews.com. The CU has six CUES members.
Fort Knox Federal Credit Union, Radcliff, Ky., was awarded the Department of the Army’s 2011 Distinguished Service Award for Credit Unions during the Defense Credit Union Council Annual Conference held in Denver. The CU recieved this honor in recognition of its many, varied and ongoing support activities extended to the soldiers, civilian employees, veterans, retirees and their families who serve or are affilated with the Fort Knox military post. Fort Knox FCU was selected from all on-post credit unions in the nation. The CU has eight CUES members.
New Position/Retirement: Chris McDonald has been named president/CEO of Northwest Federal Credit Union, Herndon, Va. He has been president/CEO of Andrews Federal Credit Union, Suitland, Md., for the past four years. He will succeed Gerrianne “Winky” Burks, a member of the CUES Board of Directors, who is retiring at the end of the year. McDonald has been elected to the CUES Board or Directors and will take office in November at CUES’ CEO/Executive Team Network.
Community Involvement: American 1 Credit Union, Wayne, Mich., was a $1,000 Gold Sponsor of the UWUA Local 223 Gas Division and DTE Energy-MichCon Charity Golf Outing to benefit The Heat and Warmth Fund. THAW provides low-income individuals and families in Michigan with emergency energy assistance. The CU has six CUES members.
Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union, Tampa, Fla., donated $6,782 to the Arbor Day Foundation, the largest nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees. The donation will support tree planting and restoration efforts in Florida’s state forests. This contribution is a result of the credit union’s strategic plan to create a clean energy future and will culminate in the planting of approximately 40,000 trees by the credit union in just three years. The CU has nine CUES members.
On Aug. 3, more than 1,200 plebes from the U.S. Naval Academy class of 2016 were the honored guest of the Bowie Baysox and Navy Federal Credit Union, Vienna, Va., for the 12th annual “Navy Night” ball game and fireworks celebration at the Bowie Baysox Stadium.
