Navy Federal Credit Union, Vienna, Va., was recently named one of San Diego Business Journal’s 2012 Best Places to Work in San Diego. Navy FCU ranked 22nd in the large company category.

The readers of several Colorado news publications in Adams County selected Horizons North Credit Union, Northglenn, Colo., their best banking provider (includes banks and credit unions) for 2012. For the second year in row Horizons North CU received the Readers’ Choice award as the best credit union in the area from the Northglenn-Thornton Sentinel, Westminster Window, and Westsider. Additionally, the CU’s shred event was voted best Annual Event in Adams County. The CU has four CUES members.

Merger: Atlantic Financial Federal Credit Union, with one CUES member in Hunt Valley, Md., has acquired ABACO Federal Credit Union, Perry Hall, Md.

Industrial Credit Union (with three CUES members), Bellingham, Wash., will acquire Ferndale Refinery Credit Union, Ferndale, Wash., on Oct. 1.

Allegacy Federal Credit Union (with one CUES member), Winston-Salem, N.C., is merging in I-R Employees Federal Credit Union, Mocksville, N.C.

Community Involvement: Dozens of children will be returning to school this fall with backpacks full of new supplies thanks to the generosity of Altura Credit Union, Riverside, Calif., members and employees. Over a three-week period, Altura CU collected donations at its branches for Riverside County’s “Fill a Backpack Program.” The CU filled 11 boxes with school supplies and donated 15 backpacks. The CU has 12 CUES members.

Securityplus Federal Credit Union, Baltimore, donated school supplies to over 200 eighth grade students attending Roland Park Elementary Middle School. In addition, the CU offered to provide free financial literacy education and awareness materials to teachers at the school. The CU has two CUES members.
