Blog: Tips for Avoiding Wire Fraud:
In this CUES Skybox post, CUES Editor Lisa Hochgraf tells of needing to wire money to Spain ahead of a family trip there. She writes: “I could tell my credit union was being careful. But I never really thought about just how easy it could be for some fraudster to pretend they were me, send in the completed wire transfer request form and a copy of my driver’s license—and then wire away my money to their own bank account, set up for the purpose of receiving fraudulent transfers.”

The judges for the CUES Next Top Credit Union Exec challenge have been announced: Deedee Myers, CEO, DDJ Myers in Phoenix; Dr. Desreen Marquis, CEO, NAJ Co-operative Credit Union, Kingston, Jamaica; and Patrick La Pine, CCC, president/CEO, League of Southeastern Credit Unions & Affiliates, Tallahassee, Fla.

CUES to Offer Compensation Consulting Through New Partnerships
CUES has partnered with two firms to offer compensation consulting to the credit union industry: Carlson Dettmann Consulting LLC, Madison, Wis., and Intelligent Compensation LLC, Pflugerville, Texas. Both firms focus on executive and incentive compensation, as well as base and bonus plans.

Member News:

Anniversary: Advancial Federal Credit Union, Dallas, celebrated its 75th anniversary with baseball themed contests and activities for employees and members. The promotion for members ended with a drawing for a 75” television. The employee grand prize was also a TV and a baseball watching party. The CU has two CUES members.

Honored: Two CUES members have been named to the Credit Union Times Trailblazers 40 Below list.
•    Bill Clancy, VP/retail strategy at Lake Michigan Credit Union, Grand Rapids, Mich.; and
•    Matt Vance, senior product development supervisor at Salal Credit Union, Seattle.

Obituary: Fred L. Kent, former president/CEO of First Credit Union, Chandler, Ariz., passed away on Sept. 20 at the age of 67.

Promotion: Stacey Remick has been promoted to president/CEO of LANCO Federal Credit Union, Lancaster, Pa. Previously she was VP/member services.

Wayne Winkler, CCE, has been promoted to president/CEO of Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, Kingston, N.Y. The CU’s former chief lending officer had been serving as interim CEO since the previous CEO, William Spearman, CCE, retired in April.

Retirement/New Position: Paul Phillips Jr., president/CEO of Vision Financial Federal Credit Union, Durham, N.C., has retired, effective Sept. 28, after 22 years of service at the CU and more than 50 years working in the financial services industry.  Michael Waylett is the new president/CEO. Previously, he was president/CEO of Memorial Credit Union, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Community Involvement: Hershey Federal Credit Union, Hershey, Pa., recently  raised  $280  for  the  Penn  State Hershey  Children’s  Hospital  by  participating  in  the Miracle Jeans Day campaign. Members helped raise funds by purchasing hot dogs and soda and the CU staff paid to wear jeans for the day. The CU has one CUES member.

CUES Supplier Member News: Robert C. Albanese, president/CEO of Pentegra Retirement Services, White Plains, N.Y., announced he will retire effective June 30, 2013. Pentegra’s board has chosen John E. Pinto to succeed Albanese, and also elected him a member of the board effective when he becomes president/CEO. Pinto is currently Pentegra’s EVP/chief operating officer.
