Several weeks ago, a Facebook friend posted a link to an educational seminar for Baltimore’s creative business owners called “Mind Your Business.” I clicked the link hoping to see that a local credit union was the sponsor. Elected: Laida Garcia, president/CEO of $383 million floridacentral Credit Union, Tampa, Fla., was recently elected chairman of the National Credit Union Foundation. This and other board changes took place at NCUF’s board meeting on Jan. 14.
Other CUES members on the board include:
- Lee Butke, president/CEO, Corporate One Federal Credit Union, Columbus, Ohio, who was elected treasurer;
- Winona Nava, CCUE, president/CEO, Guadalupe Credit Union, Santa Fe, N.M., who was elected secretary;
- Angela McCathran, president/CEO, People’s Trust Federal Credit Union, Houston;
- John Graham, president/CEO, Kentucky Employees Credit Union, Frankfort, Ky.;
- Rudy Hanley, president/CEO, SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union, Santa Ana, Calif.;

Honored: Navy Federal Credit Union, Vienna, Va., has been named to FORTUNE magazine’s 2013 list of "100 Best Companies to Work For." This marks Navy FCU’s third appearance on the list, having first been recognized in 2008 and again in 2012. The CU has four CUES members.
Merger: Rio Grande Credit Union (with one CUES member), has acquired New Mexico Central Credit Union, both of Albuquerque, N.M.
New Position: James Nastars is the new president/CEO of Meritrust Credit Union, Wichita, Kans. Previously, he was SVP/lending and collections at University Federal Credit Union, Austin, Texas.
Promotion: Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union has promoted Stephen A. Carle to SVP/chief lending officer. In this newly created position, Carle will provide oversight for mortgage operations, loan servicing, consumer lending, Visa and member business services.
Retirement/Promotion: Jay Magulski, president/chief operating officer of Landmark Credit Union, New Berlin, Wis., has been named CEO. He succeeds Ron Kase, who has retired.
Scholarship: UW Credit Union, Madison, Wis., is pleased to announce an award of $300,000 to scholarship endowment funds at the UW System campuses the CU serves. The CU has one CUES member.
Community Involvement: Genisys Credit Union, Pontiac, Mich., recently teamed up with Rochester Adams High School Investment Club to help educate students on the importance of saving and investing money. All members of the club participated in an online game, investing in virtual stocks throughout the fall months. One student was awarded a $50 Visa gift card by the CU for developing the largest growing stock portfolio this past semester. Genisys CU continues to promote student involvement by awarding small gift certificates to students who attend weekly meetings. The CU has two CUES members.
Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, East Lansing, Mich., marked Martin Luther King Jr., Day with an announcement that it is contributing $1 million to the MSU College of Music to establish a jazz artist-in-residence program. The CU has 10 CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group Membership.
Securityplus Federal Credit Union, Baltimore, partnered with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Employees Activities Association to collect monetary donations for the Walter Reed National Military and Medical Center to support wounded warriors, active duty military and their families. Member donations totaled $1,043 and, with the CU match, a total of $2,043 was presented to the EAA. The CU has two CUES members.
CUES Supplier Member News: Pentegra Retirement Services, White Plains, N.Y., announced the promotion of Charles “Chuck” W. Coldwell Jr. to VP/consulting services. Coldwell will oversee Pentegra’s retirement plan consulting group, the high level relationship management team for Pentegra’s national client base, and develop key strategic initiatives to enrich Pentegra’s client experience.
