Elected: CU Service Network announced the results of its board of directors election. Three CUES members were re-elected for three-year terms:
• Carla Hedrick, president/CEO of Denver Community Credit Union, Denver;
• Gerry Agnes, president/CEO of Elevations Credit Union, Boulder, Colo., and
• Scott McNeil, president/CEO of Foothills Credit Union, Lakewood, Colo.
Merger: SELCO Community Credit Union (with three CUES members), Eugene, Ore., is merging with $33 million Greater Oregon Federal Credit Union, Burns, Ore.
Milestone: Kinecta Federal Credit Union, Manhattan Beach, Calif., has surpassed the 250,000 member mark for the first time in its history. The CU has eight CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group Membership.
Name Change: Northwest Resource Federal Credit Union, Portland, Ore., changed its name to Trailhead Credit Union. The CU has one CUES member.
Promotion/Retirement: Christopher Owen, CEO of Meriwest Credit Union, San Jose, Calif., is retiring and will be succeeded by Julie Kirsch, EVP/chief operating officer at the CU.
Community Involvement: As part of a second wave of fundraising, the employees of Affinity Federal Credit Union, Basking Ridge, N.J., continued their drive for donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy. In addition to a truckload of non-perishable items, such as food, bleach, pillows and blankets, the CU presented The People’s Pantry, Toms River, N.J., with a check for $1,438. In December 2012, CU employees raised $1,887 along with a huge amount of goods donated by employees and members. The CU has 47 CUES members as part of its CUES Advancing Management Group Membership.
During May, American 1 Credit Union, Jackson, Mich., raised $505 for the Great Lakes Burn Camp, a special place for kids ages 6 to 17 to meet and have fun with other burn survivors. The camp strives to remove barriers these kids face on a regular basis from society. Every Friday American 1 CU’s home office and North St. branch locations in Jackson had fresh popped popcorn and bottled water available for members who donated. The last Friday of the month, the CU also made caramel corn, which was a huge success. The CU has six CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group Membership.
The Financial Education team at Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union, Lowell, Mass., has achieved its goal of providing financial education to 10,000 people between Sept. 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013. The team reached its 10,066th individual as of May 31, one month ahead of schedule. To achieve its goal, the team conducted a total of 407 presentations to those ranging in age from pre-school through senior citizens. Classes were conducted in public and private schools, churches, non-profit organizations, and for community groups. Classes focused on such topics as basic banking, budgeting, credit, career paths and entrepreneurship. The CU has six CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group Membership.
San Francisco Federal Credit Union, recently participated in a major playground clean-up in partnership with the San Francisco Parks Alliance. Over two days in May, 78 CU employees contributed 90 volunteer hours to help clean up Raymond Kimbell Playground and Buchanan Street Mall playgrounds, both near the CU’s main branch. This year’s clean-up was the largest so far for the CU, with a record number of managers and staff participating. The CU has 10 CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group Membership.
Sunova Credit Union, Selkirk, Manitoba, has completed its participation in the Canadian Co-operative Association Women’s Mentorship Program. The CU hosted a staff member from the CCS Savings and Credit Co-operative Society Ltd. (located in Myanmar) as a part of its growing participation in the global co-operative and credit union movement. The CCA Women’s Mentorship Program is an annual training and exposure program designed to provide women working in financial cooperatives with a unique opportunity for professional development. Sunova CU’s guest, Moh Moh Khin, was given the opportunity to job shadow at the CU’s new high-tech Winnipeg branches in addition to being given an in-depth look at the organization’s award-winning marketing and IT departments. The CU has three CUES members.
Supplier Member News: Beyond Marketing, LLC, Lenexa, Kans., announced the additions of manager of client experience Michael Lehr and interactive marketing specialist Jeff Birnbaum. In addition, Kat Vorkink received a promotion to manager/growth strategies.
IDG's CIO magazine has announced CUNA Mutual Group, Madison, Wis., is among its 2013 CIO 100 award recipients. The 26th annual awards program recognizes organizations worldwide that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology. This year’s honored project for CUNA Mutual Group was for its Retirement Radar mobile annuity planning application. Launched in November 2012, Retirement Radar leverages “gamification” techniques for tablet, mobile and PC use. By integrating gamified design and mechanics, Radar creates a clear sales experience for customers and financial advisors. Easy-to-understand icons and visual imagery enable the advisor to illustrate a fun, personalized solution to the otherwise serious, sometimes frightening, and complex topic of retirement income. This year’s award recognition marks the sixth time CUNA Mutual Group has received the CIO 100 honor since 2004.
