Obituaries: Harry Ovitt, Jr., president/CEO of NSWC Federal Credit Union, Dahlgren, Va., was killed in a car accident on his way to work last week. He was 63.
Gary Bell, president/CEO at Co-op Federal Credit Union, passed away on Aug. 1 from a bacterial sinus infection. He was 54 years old. Bell had served as a CUES Northern California Council officer since 2010.
New Position: Michael Rose has joined Affinity Federal Credit Union, Basking Ridge, N.J., as VP/ information technology. He joins the CU from Vertex Merchant Solutions, where he served as chief information officer.
Promotion: Jim Hayes is the new president/CEO of Andrews Federal Credit Union, Suitland, Md. He has served as interim CEO since last September.
Retirement/Promotion: Sarah O’Brien, EVP/controller at Navy Army Community Credit Union, Corpus Christi, Texas, has been promoted to president/CEO of the credit union. She succeeds Wayne Vann, who retired.
Appointed: Paul Trylko, CEO of Austin-based Amplify Credit Union, was named chairman of Cornerstone Credit Union League, a newly formed league encompassing credit unions/associations from Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Michael J. Castellana, president/CEO of $2.5 billion SEFCU, Albany, N.Y., and Glenn D. Barks, president/CEO of $1.9 billion First Community Credit Union, Chesterfield, Mo., have been named to the Federal Reserve Board’s 2014 Community Depository Institutions Advisory Council.
Honored: $270 million Christian Financial Credit Union, Roseville, Mich., was named the 2013 Gen Y Credit Union Contest grand prize winner by NerdWallet. The CU won $2,000 for its social media scavenger hunt, which teaches financial literacy through a series of online and real-life challenges. The CU has nine CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group Membership. In addition, $61 million Financial One Credit Union, Columbia Heights, Minn., won a special award for CUs under $100 million in assets for its “What’s Your Number?” financial literacy initiative. The CU has five CUES members as part of its CUES Advancing Management Group Membership.
Milestone: Metro Credit Union, Chelsea, Mass., announced its loan and mortgage portfolio has surpassed $1 billion in total assets. The CU has 14 members as part of its CUES’ Center for Credit Union Board Excellence membership.
New Name: Tyco Federal Credit Union, Redwood City, Calif., has changed its name to Reach Federal Credit Union. The CU has one CUES member.
Community Involvement: San Francisco Federal Credit Union has announced a new partnership with KNBR, home of the San Francisco 49ers radio broadcast, and a sponsorship of TLC for Kids Sports, a Bay Area community outreach program that improves kids’ sports fields. Through the partnership, the CU will exclusively sponsor the “Touchdowns for TLC” feature during the 49ers post-game radio broadcast. The CU will also participate in a number of TLC for Kids Sports events and volunteer efforts, including the ribbon cutting for the grand-prize winner of a TLC for Kids Sports’ field renovation. The CU has 10 CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group Membership.
CUES Supplier Member News: Ryan Anderson is joining The Members Group, Des Moines, Iowa, as VP/product. Anderson comes from Wells Fargo & Company, where he served in a variety of senior-level positions since joining the global financial institution in 2002, most recently as VP/business and market strategy. At TMG, he will oversee strategy and execution for the payment company’s product developments and enhancements.
