Elected: The African-American Credit Union Coalition elected Lynette Smith, president/CEO of $89 million Washington Gas Light Federal Credit Union, Springfield, Va., as board chairman.

Honored: Sarah Canepa Bang, president of CO-OP Shared Branching – FSCC, LLC and chief strategy officer at CO-OP Shared Branching, is the winner of the 2014 Herb Wegner Memorial Award for Individual Achievement. The National Credit Union Foundation honor selected her for her leadership and tireless commitment to the credit union philosophy.
Navy Federal Credit Union, Vienna, Va., was selected as ninth best “Mega Employer” by the San Diego Business Journal in its search for 2013’s Best Places to Work in San Diego. The annual contest was open to all businesses with locations in San Diego, with the top 100 companies ranked by small, medium, large, and the newly added mega employer category, which represents 2,000 U.S. employees or more. The CU has four CUES members.
Mountain America Credit Union, West Jordan, Utah, has been honored with the 2013 Alfred P. Sloan Award for Excellence in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility. The award recognizes the use of flexibility and other effective practices as workplace strategies that increase business and employee success. The CU has 139 CUES members as part of its CUES Advancing Management Group membership.
Merger: Co-op Services Credit Union, Livonia, Mich., is merging in Rivers Edge Community Credit Union, Allen Park, Mich., which has one CUES member. Co-op Services CU has nine CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group membership.
Name Change: Oregon Employees Federal Credit Union, Salem, has changed its name to Heritage Grove Federal Credit Union. The CU has six CUES members as part of its CUES Advancing Management Group membership.
New Position/Retirement: Jack Lawson, formerly chief operating officer at Self-Help Federal Credit Union, Oakland, Calif., is the new president/CEO of Missoula Federal Credit Union, Missoula, Mont. He succeeds Gary Clark, CCE, who is retiring.
New Position: Mike Lee is the new president/CEO of Kane County Teachers Credit Union, Elgin, Ill. Previously, he was VP/member relations at Alloya Corporate Federal Credit Union, Warrenville, Ill. He succeeds Craig Bradley.
Community Involvement: Lake Michigan Credit Union, Grand Rapids, Mich., is pleased to announce the 2013 kick-off of its One Pencil Project. Designed to assist cash-strapped community schools, this initiative enters its third year and extends through the end of August. All CU branches serve as collection sites for donated school supplies. The CU has 12 CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group membership.
CUES Supplier Member: Third Degree Advertising, Oklahoma City, Okla., recently launched the Business360° Process™ for credit union CEOs and executive management. The program analyzes four areas of credit union business: competitive advantage, delivery channels, organizational data and human capital.
