Obituary: Al George, CCD, former director and chairman of North Island Credit Union, San Diego, has passed away. George, 2003 CUES Director of the Year, was a dedicated credit union volunteer, serving as chairman of the California Credit Union League and Credit Union National Association and is a former director of the World Council of Credit Unions. In addition, he served as a director of San Diego Gas & Electric Credit Union (now Financial 21 Credit Union).
Honored: In recognition of his outstanding leadership and selfless commitment to the credit union industry, the National Credit Union Foundation is pleased to announce Tim Haegelin, retired president/CEO of Generations Federal Credit Union, San Antonio, as one of three winners of the 2014 Herb Wegner Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement.
David Larson, SVP/branch services, has been named interim president/CEO of Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union, St. Paul, following the resignation of Kyle Markland.
New Position: Todd Adams, senior vice president of Alloya Corporate Federal Credit Union, Warrenville, Ill., has been named interim CEO, following the resignation for personal reasons of Bill Walby.
Lauretta A. Farrell has joined Affinity Federal Credit Union, Basking Ridge, N.J., as AVP/external affairs and executive director of Affinity Federal Credit Union Foundation. In addition, Michael Rose has joined the CU as VP/information technology.
Merger: Goldenwest Credit Union, Ogden, Utah, and USU Charter Credit Union, Logan, Utah, are merging on Oct. 1. USU CU branches will maintain their brand and will operate as a division of Goldenwest CU. Goldenwest CU has four CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group Membership.
Community Involvement: FORUM Credit Union, Indianapolis, recently launched a youth entrepreneur program called Bright Start, designed to promote early entrepreneurial skills for kids and teens. The program offers help for youth interested in starting their own business, including resources for conceptualizing an idea, marketing, and running the business. As part of Bright Start, the CU recently sponsored a contest for kids who have their own business. Youth ages 8-19 could submit a two-minute video explaining their business and what they've learned from their experience. FORUM awarded prizes of $100 to the three winners. The winning videos can be viewed here. The CU has eight CUES members as part of its CUES Executive Group Membership.
