PSECU Codes Outgoing E-mails so Members Can Tell
They're for Real
When members receive
an unsolicited e-mail from PSECU, Harrisburg, Pa., they have an extra way to know that
the e-mail is really from the credit union. Working with its marketing e-mail
vendor, DocuMatix,
the $2.3 billion CU recently added a system that puts the first four digits
of a member's account number in the upper right corner of the e-mail.
DocuMatix
President Paul Jaramillo says the new functionality allows a credit union using
the DocuMatix system to customize this "anti-phishing" field in terms of placement within an e-mail
and what numbers are usedwheather the first or last in the account number,
for example. In other words, the anti-phishing field
is managed like a traditional merge field in bulk e-mail sending. The data for
the anti-phishing field is included in the comma-delimited
merge file the CU imports into DocuMatix Email Manager, and the DocuMatix system checks
to ensure that the right number of the right kind of characters fill the field
after the merge.
"Our
e-mails will not launch unless they have that (anti-phishing)
field," explains Gail Wenger, PSECU marketing research and data base unit administrator.
The credit union currently puts the code on all marketing e-mails, e-alerts
and informational e-mails. While the credit union hasn't yet added the code
to e-mails responding to member inquiry, "we're working to make everything
consistent," Wenger says.
To
let members know about the new code, PSECU put articles on its Web site, in
its newsletter and also sent an e-mail to every member with an e-mail address
on file. "We actually did receive a number of e-mails back saying it was
a great idea," Wenger says.

Technology Designed to Support Indirect
Lending Cross-Sells
Last week Better
Branches, a CUSO specializing in front- and back-office workflow solutions,
announced it had teamed with SegmentOne, a provider of turn-key outbound sales programs.
The two will offer a combined technology and sales services solution designed
to increase cross-selling ratios for members obtained through indirect lending
channels, helping credit unions convert single-service members into multiple
account households without increasing staff or training costs.
"One
of the credit union industry's highest priorities is to increase its services
per household, especially in areas like indirect auto, where there is an abundance
of single-service households," comments Steve Williams, principal, Cornerstone
Advisors Inc., CUES' partner in CUES Tech Port. "It's good to
see tools like these coming on the market."

Compliance
Drives IT Training
Financial institutions and
insurance companies are spending more on training their IT staff to meet the
demands of regulatory compliance, according to training provider Thomson NETg.
Investment in IT
training by the finance sector slumped after 2000, but showed signs of recovery
in 2005 as employers began to step up IT spending. "We are seeing increasing
demand for training for large systemsnew systems that they are putting
in and systems they are already using," said Dave Parrot, marketing director
of Thomson NETg. "We have seen systems going in to support management and
compliance risk over the past couple of years."
