      Strategy in the Boardroom: Blue Ocean Framework

      This session will focus on creating value in competitive settings. You will develop a framework to explore the links between the customer, the employee and the shareholder. Objectives are to:

      • Explore the challenges associated with strategic idea generation
      • Learn about “value innovation” frameworks to guide strategic thinking
      • Gain experience applying value innovation principles to relevant business settings

      Duties, Risks and Liabilities

      Here, you will examine the responsibilities of directors and executives, specifically relating to these uncertain financial times. Objectives are to:

      • Examine the fiduciary duties of directors and the role of executives
      • Explore the issue of director liability

      Negotiating in the Boardroom

      Learn a practiced approach to managing information exchanges among board members and with management. Objectives are to:

      • Discover ways to enhance your ability to effectively negotiate in the boardroom through efficient and strategic communication
      • Gain a deeper understanding of how information should most effectively flow between management and the board

      Influencing Change

      In this simulation, you will take on the role of a senior executive who has to make a hiring decision. The results of your decision will become data used immediately in classroom discussion. Objectives are to:

      • Identify causes of sub-optimal information sharing in board decisions
      • Recognize the need for, and describe tactics for engaging in, constructive conflict in board discussions
      • Employ six scientific principles of persuasion and influence to describe procedural and interpersonal tactics for influencing a board

      Role of the Governance Committee in Developing Board Effectiveness

      This session will focus on the role governance committees can play in building better, more effective boards. Participants will take part in a collaboration game to experience the types of behaviors that lead to positive and negative exchanges in the boardroom. Objectives are to:

      • Identify a variety of processes and tools boards can use to enhance their governance effectiveness
      • Strengthen your understanding of the role of both board and individual evaluation, and how those evaluations can enhance the board’s functions

      Board Evaluation and Director Assessment

      Learn several approaches to evaluating board and individual director effectiveness. Develop a framework for selecting new directors and recognize the socio-political complexities characterizing boards. Objectives are to:

      • Enhance understanding of how to select directors
      • Explore in-depth frameworks for making the selection
