Credit Union Executives Society

At 17, my first job was as an item-processing clerk at a local credit union. Over the past 18 years, I’ve held almost every job in the industry, working as a teller, in member-services, lending and accounting. Then I moved on to establish a Jacksonville branch of the CUSO, United Solutions Company. Using the CUSO’s successful business model, I launched a staffing agency which hired temporary tellers and member-service representatives for credit unions. Next, I went to Orlando and Pensacola to start other divisions of the staffing company, and eventually ran four offices. In 2008, I was hired as executive vice president at PBC Credit Union in West Palm Beach, where I worked until recently when I fulfilled my ultimate career goal—I was named president/CEO of Tallahassee-Leon Federal Credit Union.
It’s sometimes difficult to network, get fresh ideas, and receive assistance at a local level because many credit unions are competing for the same business. This challenges the cooperative spirit, but CUES helps credit unions to network without having those stresses. CUES allows leaders the ability to strategize with people all over the state and all over the country, an opportunity we might never get otherwise.
At least once a week, my staff and I face a business challenge that we can solve through the CUESNet Forum. It’s not only our employees but also our board who can take advantage of the open dialogue. Last year we had questions about allowance funding methodology, TDRs, the Credit Card Act and open-end lending. This year, I’m looking for solutions and alternatives regarding our corporate credit union relationships. It’s awesome to have the opportunity to say “Do you know anything about this particular vendor?” or “Have you ever tried this before?” We know that if a subject is new to us, it’s likely not new to somebody else.
Over the course of my career, many of my role models were CUES members. When it was my turn to be a member, it was like joining an elite club. It’s great to be a part of something that’s been around so long, and is so well-established. Being a CUES NextGen member, I find that what was old is new again.
My name is Lisa, from Tallahassee-Leon Federal Credit Union, Tallahassee, Fla., and I am CUES.
