Note: Since this interview was conducted and posted in 2009, Ernesto has been promoted to President/CEO of Camino Federal Credit Union.
Growing up, I never thought my professional path would be in the credit union industry. But, one of my early jobs was as a part-time credit union teller; I fell in love with the business and decided to stay.
It turned out to be a good decision. The fact is, I’m committed to the movement—and CUES has played a big part in that commitment and in my career. I would never have grown to the level I’m at without CUES.
I’ve been a member for about eleven years. I first joined due to the professional development opportunities. Initially I was very interested in executive education, and I’ve since graduated from CEO Institute.
Now, I remain a member not only for the educational opportunities, but also for the networking I’ve found.
I’ve had opportunities I wouldn’t have been able to touch without CUES. For example, I’ve been selected to be on the Filene Research Institute’s i3 team. Before I attended CEO Institute, I didn’t even know what the Filene institute was. And now I’m part of one of the industry’s leading think tanks.
I’ve also met some of the smartest people I know through CUES—people that I think will be the future leaders of the movement. Many have become good friends—friends that I can count on, across the country and around the state. I’ve seen what they’ve done positively and professionally to position themselves in the industry, and I’m learning and molding myself from them.
I’m hoping to attend CUES’ Advanced Leadership Institute in the future. My ultimate goal is to become a CEO, and I trust that CUES will help me get there.
How would I sum up my experience with CUES? CUES education is top notch—it’s by far the highest quality available in our industry. There are a lot of educational opportunities out there, but they’re not backed up by networking like CUES is. I simply can’t see myself not being a CUES member.
