My name is John, and I am CUES.

My credit union experience began while I was working for Marketing Profiles, Inc., a software company in Orlando, Fla. The human resources department informed me that one of the benefits of being an employee was joining their credit union. Although I had never heard of a credit union, I checked it out, and it worked for me.

As a credit union member, I started getting the newsletters asking for volunteers. Since I had always volunteered for the United Way—and had previous financial experience on the board of the Bank Administration Institute—I thought, “why not volunteer at my credit union?” After three years of running, I finally won an election; and that was almost 11 years ago.

My initial incentive to join the Credit Union Executives Society nine years ago was the fact that I would receive a discounted registration fee to attend the Directors Leadership Institute in London.

Over the years, I have not only utilized CUES’ educational offerings, I’ve also enjoyed the many networking opportunities. For me, it’s been good to get outside my regular group of directors, to see how other credit unions are approaching similar governance and policy issues.

To this day, my favorite aspect of being a CUES member is attending the many learning opportunities. In fact, attending DLI™: Governance helped me affirm that implementing the Carver Governance Model at FAIRWINDS Credit Union was the right thing to do. The in-depth content on best practices I received while at DLI™: Governance really drove that point home for me. My credit union is now in the second year of the Carver Governance Model, and it is working great!

I enjoy being a credit union volunteer because I am in a professional setting, talking about real issues that impact people’s lives. I have a chance to make a difference.

My name is John, from FAIRWINDS Credit Union, Orlando, Fla., and I am CUES.
