My name is Julie, and I am CUES.

I am a retiree of the United Nations (UN) in New York City, where I worked for some 38 years. My last post was Chief, Budget and Finance Section, Executive Office, Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

I became a UN Federal Credit Union (UNFCU) board member in 1999 through elections by the membership at large and I am presently Secretary of the Board. The idea of sitting on this board immediately interested me because I’ve always wanted to work to improve people’s lives.

UNFCU was founded by 13 UN staff members in 1945 and today has over 86,000 members in 203 countries and territories.

I am privileged to have been a CUES Director member ever since 1999. CUES conferences and executive education programs are always part of our board’s annual approved list of conferences. We believe that we always need to sharpen our skills in the boardroom.

I recently attended DLI™: Governance in Toronto; it was a conference of high-caliber. I obtained a new perspective not only from the professors, but also from the other credit union volunteers in attendance. It was fascinating to learn how they run their credit unions, how different they are, and it was eye-opening to hear everyone’s stories.

I have encouraged other credit unions to attend CUES events, and, in fact, one of them from my native country of Barbados sent board members to the Directors Conference for the past two years. They truly appreciated the information gained as they do understand the importance of ongoing education.

The credit union movement and the United Nations share a similar goal—they both work to make the world a better place for all people. It’s global; we’re all intertwined. That’s why I remain a board member of UNFCU, and that’s why I turn to CUES to keep me in the know.
