My name is Rebecca, and I am CUES.

After ten years of membership, I began volunteering at North Island Credit Union in part because I knew the chairman of the board from our shared financial service industry careers.

For me, the first step was actually with our secret shopper program. What a great experience that was, catching our staff doing things right. When an opening arose on the supervisory committee I moved to that volunteer role and learned so much from working with our internal and external auditors. For a few years, I was fortunate to serve as the chairman of the committee. As a result of becoming more knowledgeable, the board appointed me to fill an open position. That led to my election to several full terms of serving the credit union in a different capacity.

Like many volunteers, I held a full-time job the entire time I’ve been a volunteer with the credit union. After working in the financial services industry for about 20 years I moved into the corporate training and development field, owning my own business for the last nine years. Being a small business owner has given me a better appreciation for the services a credit union provides to those of us in that arena.

I first joined CUES® during my time on the supervisory committee. It quickly became obvious that even with a 20-year financial services background, there were unique regulatory requirements that were unfamiliar. After looking at all the available options, I found that the one organization repeatedly recommended by other volunteers was CUES.

Attending CUES’ conferences and offerings, I found their educational opportunities to be the most relevant and the highest quality. My three favorite CUES events have been the Directors Leadership Institute at the London Business School, the Oxford Programme on Negotiation and the Advanced Leadership Institute hosted at Harvard.

A couple years ago, I was honored to became part of CUES’ Director Advisory Panel and found it to be tremendously stimulating and a great networking opportunity. I was excited to support my credit union members while participating in a small way in what CUES is trying to accomplish.

At North Island Credit Union, anytime any one of our volunteers attends a CUES event, we ask them to report back to the board so everyone can share in the value of the experience. And when planning the coming year’s education schedule, without exception the most highly recommended and supported options will be CUES programs.

I’m really excited that CUES has broadened its learning options and resources. Whether it’s their education options, or their products and services, across the board the CUES organization listens to its members. CUES truly has the pulse of the industry and provides easy to access, helpful resources.

My name is Rebecca, from North Island Credit Union, San Diego, Calif., and I am CUES.
