I got involved with my credit union’s board because I worked with another firefighter who was a volunteer. He would come back from meetings and conferences and talk about the things he learned and how he was helping the credit union and our fellow firefighters. I thought what my friend was doing sounded interesting and that I’d also like to give back to the firefighters of Los Angeles.
As a captain for the Los Angeles Fire Department, it’s fairly easy to volunteer due to my work schedule. I’ve been on my credit union’s board for 20 years and joined CUES 16 years ago because it was an organization that all of our board members belonged to.
I’ve remained a CUES Director member because of the quality education CUES provides. The conferences I’ve attended have had excellent content, speakers and topics—and have covered the current state of affairs very well. I’ve also been able to take back the information I learned at these events and give further insight into issues that will potentially help my credit union’s members.
Directors Leadership Institute (DLI) was an outstanding educational program that helped me understand my fiduciary responsibilities and better perform my duties. Graduating from DLI and earning my Certified Credit Union Director (CCD) designation was a great thing. My profession is very hands-on and focused on physical labor, but the general population puts more emphasis on classroom learning. The CCD gives me proof of achieving a certain level of training. It shows my peers and others in the industry my abilities and commitment to my leadership role.
I also serve on the advisory board of my credit union and have found the Director Tool Kit™ to be very useful. It’s a great tool for new board members, while senior board members can use it as brush up. I told our chairman, “This book is something every new board member should be required to read.”
Whether it’s going to conferences, attending an institute or reading a manual, the overall educational value is what I like best about CUES.
CUES continues to listen to their membership and provide great services and superior benefits.
My name is Sheldon, from Los Angeles Firemen’s Credit Union, Los Angeles, and I am CUES.
