I joined CUES in 2003 when I started in the credit union industry; and I’ve continued to renew my membership because I always find value in it.
My favorite aspect of being a CUES member is the fact that I get the whole package. I can be as involved in the organization as I would like. For instance, with CUES Net™ I can keep tabs on what’s happening in the movement, but not necessarily respond to every e-mail. I can take advantage of CUES’ quality training classes and conferences as needed. And, CUES does a great job with networking opportunities as they realize that networking is equally as important as the educational aspects of their programs.
I became involved with the financial industry during my college years, working as a bank teller. However, when I graduated from college, I went to work in retail management in Denver. It only took me a year-and-a-half to figure out that wasn’t a good fit for me. Fortunately, the bank I had been working for was eager to accept me back into their team.
My next career move brought me into the movement. I became the president of small credit union in Wyoming, where I worked for five years before moving to Warren Federal Credit Union. At Warren, I was hired as the VP of Administration, promoted to EVP and later took over as CEO. Having both small and larger credit union experiences has given me a great ground-level understanding of the credit union philosophy.
One of my personal goals is to get more involved in the national credit union movement. I’ve been active at the regional level, but want to step it up a notch. To accomplish this, I am going to continue to be a CUES member and remain involved in the programs they offer. This will open up many opportunities for me to meet and network with more of my colleagues.
One of the biggest challenges I face is board education—helping our volunteers understand governance, and their role in it. CUES’ Director Tool Kit™ has been a fantastic source of information for our new and existing board members. We value that it allows us to incorporate some of our own material.
The most beneficial program I attended was CUES’ CEO/Executive Team Network™ in 2008. I took advantage of the “Pay What You Can” pricing and made some great network contacts that I have continued to keep in touch with. CUES responded well to a tough time with its topic choices and programming, which speaks volumes for their understanding of the challenges that credit unions are facing.
My name is Stephanie, from Warren Federal Credit Union, Cheyenne, Wyo., and I am CUES.
