My name is Tyler and I am CUES.

Volunteering is one of my priorities, and one of my joys. My director membership in the Credit Union Executives Society helps me maintain the balance between my duties as director and my “regular” job with the Los Angeles Police Department.

No doubt, some days, it’s hectic—but I have the support of an extraordinary team at Los Angeles Police Federal Credit Union (LAPFCU). They coach and guide me, and they’ve taught me you can’t do everything—sometimes, you just have to ”prioritize.”

I appreciate everyone who has held a leadership position here. My predecessors loved the credit union, and they taught me to love it. The chairman before me took me under his wing and mentored me. He also introduced me to the many benefits of CUES.

I didn’t even really know what credit unions were all about until I joined the LAPD. I first became a member of the LAPFCU because representatives came and spoke to us at the police academy, and explained what credit unions are and what they mean. I had been in the financial services industry before joining the force, and that background helped me to recognize the value of credit unions.

A few years later, LAPFCU was looking for members to become “volunteers at large,” which is a training program for those wanting to learn what it’s like to be on the board of directors.

So, I became a volunteer at large—that was 17 years ago, and I’ve been involved ever since.

CUES membership is a tradition at LAPFCU. I didn’t know anything about CUES when I joined, but the great leadership we had at the LAPFCU recognized that as volunteers themselves, they could mentor us, but there wasn’t enough time to give us all the support new volunteers needed. And CUES was—and still is—the premier place to get that mentoring and support. CUES has helped me with everything from time management to learning how to best mentor our new board members and volunteers at large.

We like to say CUES is a “tradition of excellence” at the LAPFCU—that’s a phrase we use to describe the service we give our members—and CUES fits right in there. CUES is a constant in the excellence we provide.

I think sometimes people participate in programs offered from organizations like CUES because it’s another line on their resume. And while I’m proud to put CUES on my resume, I’ve gained more from CUES, and I am able to provide more for our membership, than our membership even knows. So, in reality, CUES has helped our membership through their education of me— CUES is our partner.

The opportunities I find to network through CUES events are invaluable; when I run out of time and have to skip going to conferences or other CUES events, I always realize toward the end of the year that I lost more than I gained by saving those few days of not traveling to an event.

I’ve attended other conferences, and they just don’t compare with the thought CUES puts into their events. Whenever I’m at a CUES conference, whatever my expectations are, my expectations are always exceeded.

I also utilize the educational materials available, like CUES Director Edge and Credit Union Management™ magazine. I’ve discovered great foundational insight into things that are vital to our credit union.

The bottom line is I love volunteering. CUES helps me to provide the service that I have an obligation to provide. And, at the end of the day, I can say I’ve done what I need to for my members… because CUES is doing their part to help me.
