Position Description

Title:               Director of Mortgage Lending

Department:  Mortgage Operations

Reports to:     Vice President, Lending

FLSA:             Exempt

Job Grade:     16


Job Purpose:   Oversee and lead the Mortgage Lending Department.  Responsible for oversight of mortgage lending to ensure achievement of the credit union’s objectives and strategies.  This position will be primarily responsible for oversight of business development in mortgage lending and managing mortgage lending operations.  Provides training, coaching, oversight and direction of mortgage loan origination, underwriting, processing, funding, post-closing, and servicing.  Provides strong leadership in promoting teamwork, staff development, exceptional member service, and recognition of staff accomplishments.


Essential Job Results:



  1. Responsible for execution of the Credit Union’s overall direction and strategic initiatives for the Mortgage Lending Department. 
  2. Oversee all mortgage loan operations while ensuring adherence to consumer and mortgage laws, rules, and regulations.
  3. Responsible for the sales and services activities of the Mortgage Loan Originators.  Oversees all related processes, including tracking sales goals, progress toward objectives, and maintaining overall service levels for members.  Coaches, motivates, and mentors Mortgage Loan Originators.  
  4. Oversees underwriting, processing, post-closing, and servicing of all mortgage loans in a manner that results in timely and accurate completion of duties.  Coaches, motivates, and mentors operations staff.  
  5. Oversees processing, funding, and post-closing of all home equity loans in a manner that results in timely and accurate completion of duties.  Coaches, motivates, and mentors operations staff.  
  6. Makes recommendations for changes to Mortgage and Consumer Lending policy.  Oversees development and maintenance of procedures for Mortgage Lending.  Responsible for training and communication of any changes.
  7. Responsible for setting and monitoring progress on the budget for Mortgage Lending.
  8. Maintains timely knowledge of mortgage lending regulations, laws, and market conditions to initiate changes necessary.  Ensures protection of the credit union by maintaining compliance with laws and regulations. 
  9. Responsible for changes to current products and the creation of new products.
  10. Responsible for providing training and continuing education to all employees in the Mortgage Lending Department.



  1. Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training employees, maintaining a safe and secure work environment, and developing personal growth opportunities.
  2. Mentors staff by providing individual guidance and technical expertise.
  3. Works with the risk management department to conduct random audits of employees’ work.
  4. Assists staff in accomplishing results and departmental goals by coaching, counseling and disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; effectively scheduling staff to meet the credit union’s needs; planning, monitoring and appraising job results; conducting training; initiating, coordinating, implementing and enforcing systems, policies and procedures; and keeping supervisor updated on issues on a regular basis.
  5. Assists staff in completing operations by developing schedules; assigning and monitoring work; gathering resources; implementing productivity standards; resolving operations problems; maintaining procedures; implementing new procedures; keeping supervisor informed of problems and solutions.
  6. Maintains department policies and procedures by assessing practices, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and recommending changes to the supervisor.
  7. Maintains operations by initiating, recommending, coordinating and enforcing operational and personnel policies and procedures; and coordinating, developing and maintaining comprehensive procedures for each position in the operational area of responsibility.

  1. Maintains member and employee confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential and sharing on a business-related as-needed basis only.
  2. Engages in problem resolution by clarifying the member’s and/or employee’s complaint; determining the cause of the problem; selecting and explaining the best solution to solve the problem; expediting correction or adjustment; following up to ensure resolution; and keeping the supervisor informed of problems and solutions.
  3. Complies with UKFCU policies and procedures by enforcing and adhering to internal UKFCU procedures and board-established policies.
  4. Complies with federal, state and local regulations and legal requirements by enforcing and adhering to requirements.
  5. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by maintaining an awareness of competitors’ rates and terms, industry trends and technology; attending staff meetings; identifying opportunities to attend seminars that enhance skills and maintain knowledge of new products that could assist in improving operational effectiveness; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; and participating in professional societies.
  6. Contributes to a team effort by accomplishing corporate and individual goals and other related results as needed.

  • Seven to ten years of similar or related experience preferred
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to communicate with others one-on-one and in groups, fielding questions and responding to complaints.

  • Strong attention to detail required.
  • Ability to motivate and influence others, foster sound relationships, present a trustworthy and diplomatic image, and deal effectively with others concerning topics of a personal or sensitive nature.

This position allows for an optional hybrid work arrangement which includes a combination of both in-office and remote work arrangements. (Maximum of one day remote, four days in-office). To be eligible for the program, employees must complete a minimum of 6 months of continuous, regular employment, be in good standing, and submit a formal hybrid work application prior to being eligible for hybrid work, pending supervisor approval. Work schedules will be established by the employee's supervisor according to business needs. Working locations and schedules may be altered at management discretion.
