Roch Parayre, Founder and CEO, Strategique
We live in a world of uncertainty, yet most organizations plan as if the world were predictable, developing point forecasts, budgets, and initiatives that will succeed as long as the external environment cooperates.
This session will introduce an outside-in view of planning that embraces external uncertainties as a
source of superior opportunities and profit and present a scenario-based approach for crafting an adaptive strategy under conditions of uncertainty.
Seminar starts: July 2023
Live meeting dates and times:
TBD
Margaret Heffernan, Professor of Practice at the University of Bath School of Mangement (UK), Lead Faculty for the Forward Institute’s Responsible Leadership Programme
When organizations make poor ethical decisions, it is rarely because of bad people, but because good people didn’t see the problem, didn’t know where to look for information, didn’t feel confident to ask the right questions, or weren’t able to solicit the collaboration of colleagues to do so. That means there is huge potential for improvement. This seminar will engage case studies to help strengthen board members’ capacity to identify ethical issues and develop the skills to address them. You will learn:
- What stops individuals and organizations from being as ethical as they’d wish to be
- The clues and questions that lead to better decision making
- What you and your board need to feel confident that your organization is doing its best
Seminar starts: October 2023
Live meeting dates and times:
TBD
Dr. Mario Moussa, Professor at Executive Programs at Wharton School of Business; President, Moussa Consulting
All boards are teams. Like most teams, they may never reach their full potential unless they pay enough attention to the basics of communication, collaboration, and teamwork. Your board can achieve much better results by doing just a few things well. In this seminar, you will learn:
- A four-step process designed to remove the typical communication barriers and get people on the same page
- Three core foundations of successful collaboration—shared goals, clear roles, and desired group behaviors related to decision-making and information-sharing
- How to gain insight into different communication styles and adapt you style to enhance collaboration
- How to distill the essence of strategy down to a few, actionable words
- The process for applying a simple but powerful behavioral change tool called the STAR model
Seminar starts: January 2024
Live meeting dates and times:
TBD
Dr. Kathy Pearson, Adjunct Senior Fellow, Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, University of Pennsylvania; President, Enterprise Learning Solutions
Research indicates that over two-thirds of major strategic initiatives fail to be executed successfully. This seminar presents current research that identifies critical success factors in translating and progressing from strategy to execution. The role of boards in this translation and execution process will be discussed alongside a consideration of the appropriate and concrete responsibilities for members of credit union boards in raising the probability of successful execution of the institution’s strategy. In this seminar, you will learn how to:
- Understand the relationship between setting the strategy and implementing the strategy
- Assess the readiness of the organization for execution of a strategic initiative
- Identify the key uncertainties in order to build agility into the execution plan
- Determine the gaps between the current state of the organization and the optimal readiness state of the organization
- Establish the appropriate role for board members in supporting the strategic execution process
Seminar starts: April 2024
Live meeting dates and times:
TBD
Ancin Cooley, Founder and Principal, Synergy Credit Union Consulting
Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a process affected by a credit union’s board of directors and management that is applied in a strategy setting to identify potential events that may affect business. In order to effectively fulfill their role, directors must have a conceptual understanding of the risks that impact credit union earnings and capital. ERM is the most effective means of accomplishing this goal and the glue that holds strategic thinking, optimism, and pragmatic thought together. In this seminar, you will learn:
- The conceptual framework of ERM
- The differences between risk appetite, risk tolerance, and risk capacity
- The benefits of ERM and the common pitfalls to its implementation
- The key features of credit, talent, liquidity, interest rate, compliance, and strategic risks
Seminar starts: July 2024
Live meeting dates and times:
TBD
Dr. Y. Sekou Bermiss, Associate Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, Strategy and Entrepreneurship
Sustaining high performance requires that credit union leaders develop informed ways of leveraging the talent of their employees which allows their organizations to function effectively, cope with change, and maintain growth. The emergence of the field of people analytics provides a new approach to managing this issue with a focus on data-driven decision-making. Adopting this approach, however, requires significant organizational changes including a shift in how credit union leaders approach issues around people, process, and culture. Boards play an important role in this shift by advocating for improvements in talent management, advising credit union leaders about the available tools, and guiding them through the transition. In this seminar, you will learn:
- The role of board role in managing talent development and organizational health
- The field of people analytics and how it can be a tool that helps resolve issues currently facing credit unions
- The cultural and organizational factors critical for implementing and executing a strategic talent management initiative
Seminar starts: October 2024
Live meeting dates and times:
TBD
Sean Martin, Associate Professor of Business, Darden School of Business, University of Virginia Administration
In this session, we will discuss a business case of an executive in the midst of an organizational change. We will draw out what his experiences suggest about effective leadership, organizational alignment, and change. We will also workshop these themes with peers and partners in order to learn how to apply these insights into our own organizations.
