The challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century that face credit unions have created a shift in the types of resources needed in boardrooms. When organizations make poor ethical decisions, it is rarely because of bad people, but because good people didn’t see the problem, didn’t know where to look for information, didn’t feel confident to ask the right questions, or weren’t able to solicit the collaboration of colleagues to do so. That means there is huge potential for improvement. This seminar will engage case studies to help strengthen board members’ capacity to identify ethical issues and develop the skills to address them. You will learn:
- What stops individuals and organizations from being as ethical as they’d wish to be
- The clues and questions that lead to better decision making
- What you and your board need to feel confident that your organization is doing its best
Dr. Stephen Morrissette, Visiting Professor of Strategic Management, Booth School of Business, The University of Chicago

- The board’s role in strategic planning
- Best practices in strategic planning for high-performing credit unions
- How to apply and connect best practices to the needs of your credit union
- How to engage strategy during periods of turbulence -dealing with new technology or fintechs, changing competitors, and economic or pandemic uncertainty

- Assess the readiness of the organization for execution of a strategic initiative
- Identify the key uncertainties in order to build agility into the execution plan

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a process affected by a credit union’s board of directors and management that is applied in a strategy setting to identify potential events that may affect business. In order to effectively fulfill their role, directors must have a conceptual understanding of the risks that impact credit union earnings and capital. ERM is the most effective means of accomplishing this goal and the glue that holds strategic thinking, optimism, and pragmatic thought together. In this seminar, you will learn:
- The conceptual framework of ERM
- The differences between risk appetite, risk tolerance, and risk capacity
- The benefits of ERM and the common pitfalls to its implementation
- The key features of credit, talent, liquidity, interest rate, compliance, and strategic risks
Dr. Y. Sekou Bermiss, Associate Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, Strategy and Entrepreneurship
Seminar runs: January 5-19, 2023
Live meeting dates and times:
January 12 & 19
2:30 - 4:00 p.m. CST
Sustaining high performance requires that credit union leaders develop informed ways of leveraging the talent of their employees which allows their organizations to function effectively, cope with change, and maintain growth. The emergence of the field of people analytics provides a new approach to managing this issue with a focus on data-driven decision-making. Adopting this approach, however, requires significant organizational changes including a shift in how credit union leaders approach issues around people, process, and culture. Boards play an important role in this shift by advocating for improvements in talent management, advising credit union leaders about the available tools, and guiding them through the transition. In this seminar, you will learn:
- The role of board role in managing talent development and organizational health
- The field of people analytics and how it can be a tool that helps resolve issues currently facing credit unions
- The cultural and organizational factors critical for implementing and executing a strategic talent management initiative
Dr. Michael Useem, Professor of Management and Director of the Center for Leadership and Change Management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania
Seminar runs: April 2023
Live meeting dates and times:
TBD
Organizations are finding that initiatives to become more flexible and fast-acting require effective leadership and a supportive culture. The challenge is to build leaders and high-performing teams throughout the organization, and that requires a capacity to think strategically, communicate persuasively, and decide decisively. Leadership at the top is also being strengthened as boards take a more active role in decisions that once belonged largely to the chief executive. However, for all the advantages of increased board engagement, this can raise questions of authority and meddling in day-to-day operations. In this seminar you will learn:
- How directors at many organizations are developing a new road map–for when to lead, when to partner, and when to stay out of the way
- Emerging practices that help ensure that governing boards and executive teams are working in partnership to lead the enterprise as high-performing teams
