Whether you're looking to comply with the recent NCUA ruling or just want to implement succession planning as a good business practice at your credit union, there has never been a more critical time to be doing succession planning – both for your boards and your management teams. We are in the middle of what is being called a Silver Tsunami with over 10,000 people a day reaching retirement age. Are you ready for what this means for your credit union? In this session we will talk about how the high rate of retirements happening now and in the foreseeable future, are affecting credit unions across the country. During the session, we will ask the group specific questions regarding succession planning practices, and provide immediate feedback to you, so you know what your peers are doing! Build for Tomorrow: Lessons for Adapting to Change
Jason Feifer, Editor-in-Chief, Entrepreneur Magazine
Times of great disruption can be times of great opportunity, but how do you take advantage of it? In this high energy keynote, Jason Feifer breaks down an actionable strategy for navigating moments of disruption, whether they’re giant (like the pandemic) or more specific (internal reorgs or shifts in industries). Change is tough, but it’s also a thrilling time filled with almost limitless opportunities for positive change and growth. Jason argues that all change happens in four phases: First we panic, then we adapt, then we find a new normal, and then we reach Wouldn’t Go Back, the moment in which we develop something so new and valuable to our lives and careers that we say, “I wouldn’t want to go back to a time before I had this.” Jason offers a way to reframe relationships with change, spot opportunity in the once impossible, and get to Wouldn’t Go Back.

Credit Union Board Renewal: A Pressing Need
Panelists from Red Rocks Credit Union: Darius Wise, CEO, Joeri Carty, Board Chair, Tiffany Watts, Vice Chair
Moderator: Chad Helminak, VP/Talent Development Programming, CUES
As the average age of credit union members continues to rise, it’s no surprise that boardrooms are aging in parallel. This demographic trend poses a critical challenge to the long-term vitality of the credit union movement. To remain relevant, resilient, and responsive to the evolving needs of members, credit unions must prioritize board renewal. In this moderated panel discussion, a facilitator will guide a candid conversation exploring why board renewal is not just a strategic opportunity but a necessity. Panelists will share practical, sustainable steps credit unions can take to infuse their boards with fresh perspectives and diverse voices, particularly from younger generations. A new wave of directors can catalyze innovation, energize leadership, and help credit unions better connect with emerging member segments.
Key discussion topics will include:

Unbounded workforces and multiple versions of hybrid work-location models are new to C-Suite conversations across many industries. The workforce conversation is one we all need to be aware of in a continual learning mode. Your DDJ Myers sessions hosts suggest adding the topic of strategic workforce analysis (SWA) to your strategic planning conversations with a fresh perspective, rich open-ended questions, and the knowledge that you will be positively inspired by ideas on caring for employees who care for your members.
Actionable information regarding workforce considerations for the future is the session focus, which includes a deeper dive into many generative questions. Which workforce hybrid model is best? Which roles can or should be 100% remote? What organizational changes need to be made to support a remote workforce? What options are available to cultivate informational cultural interactions in a remote situation? How many employees will be needed in five years (or ten), assuming we retain our current growth? What new leadership practices support a hybrid workforce? How does goal setting integrate into a hybrid-located organization with employees caring for children and home-schooling?
Key Takeaways:
These are exciting times for boards and how they lead! Boardroom conversations have changed in recent months to focus on the immediate priorities of supporting the membership and persevering as an organization. In some ways, the pressure of the global pandemic is highlighting the need for focused skill development, long-term philosophical (re)alignment, and actionable succession plans that focus on development at the governance level. Beyond the urgent lies the strategic opportunity...but where to start?
During this webinar, DDJ Myers will present credit union research findings among eight best-practice governance categories and directors’ assessed technical skills against benchmark requirements. Within the details of the data, micro-habits and skill concentrations are revealed to make a macro-level impact on a self-governing fiduciary body. The good news is, most boards identify low hanging fruit that has an immediate impact on increasing the board's sense of accomplishment.
Key Takeaways:
Numerous CEO shifts this year directly impact potentially outdated compensation philosophies related to creating a rewards package to retain and reward a newly hired or promoted CEO. Unfortunately, CEOs are often unsure of their performance metrics, short-term incentives, long-term incentives, and retirement package a year or more after they assume a CEO role. The impact is a lack of clarity on success factors between the Board and CEO, which inevitably transfers and translates to a less-than-adequate clarity of priorities and actions within the executive and management ranks.
The best outcome is a strategically oriented compensation philosophy and game plan to align performance expectations and compensation components to the needs of the organization in an effective and expeditious manner.

Situational Leadership
Carolyn Stern, President and CEO, Carolyn Stern & Associates Inc.
Research shows that employees require varying levels of direction and support based on their competence and commitment. However, many managers rely on a single leadership style, applying it universally in every situation. This approach often leads to a mismatch between what employees need and how they are led, potentially hindering performance and development. Strong leaders adapt their leadership style to provide employees with precisely what they need when they need it. They offer the right balance of guidance, care, and autonomy to ensure their team members thrive. To do this effectively, leaders must consider each employee’s competence, motivation, and the specific task or goal at hand. This workshop helps leaders understand how to tailor their leadership style to different situations and individuals. Participants will learn the importance of task assignments, explore the four leadership styles—directing, guiding, supporting, and delegating—and develop the skills to assess competence and motivation effectively. By the end of this session, leaders will have the tools to move beyond a “one-size-fits-all” approach and achieve optimal results by adapting to the unique needs of their team members.
